Parking under the trees by the river

Waterside and the streets climbing away from it are lined with mature trees, and cars left under them collect sap and bird lime through the summer. Both are acidic. In warm weather they etch into the lacquer within days, and once they have, a wash will not take the mark out.

The fix is unglamorous: get it off early with a dedicated remover rather than a fingernail, and keep a coating on the car so it comes away easily. Cars on the round through July and August rarely have a mark left in them by September.

The A59 and the York road

The A59 through town is gritted hard and carries a lot of quarry and farm traffic. Cars that commute east towards York come back with the nose of the bonnet and the mirror backs chipped, and with salt sitting in the arch liners all winter.

Chips are a film conversation. Salt is a washing one, and the two go together: film on the front, and a proper wash every fortnight through the cold months.

The cobbles and the narrow lanes

The old lanes near the castle are tight, cobbled and busy at weekends. Wheel damage here is not from potholes, it is from kerbs: scraped faces on the nearside, and alloys that pick up grit that nobody can reach behind the spokes.

We take wheels off when we are coating them, which is the only way to get the barrels properly. On the round we clean the faces and behind the spokes with dedicated tools, so brake dust never gets a chance to bake on.

Station cars and daily commuters

Knaresborough station puts a lot of cars on the road at seven in the morning and back on a drive at seven at night, most of them washed at a garage on the way through. That is where the swirls come from, not the miles.

A car on our fortnightly round costs less than two garage washes a month and keeps the paint flat. That is the whole argument for the round in one sentence.

Newer estates towards Scriven and Boroughbridge Road

The newer estates north of town are full of two and three year old cars on private drives, which is the ideal case for a coating: the paint is still sound, the preparation is short, and the owner has somewhere safe to wash it.

Most of these cars need one machine stage and a coating, not a full correction. We will say so when we see it, and we would rather book the smaller job.

Knaresborough questions

The ones we get asked on the phone most weeks.

Do you come to Knaresborough, or do I come to you?

Both. Correction, coating and film are unit jobs, and we collect from Knaresborough at no charge. The maintenance round comes to your drive on Tuesdays and Fridays.

How long does the drive over take?

Ten minutes on a normal day, a little more when the A59 is busy. If you are dropping the car off we will get you back, or you can wait in the unit.

My car lives under trees. Is a coating worth it?

Yes, more than usual. Sap and lime come off a coated car with far less work, and they do far less damage in the days before you notice them.

Can you sort kerbed alloys?

We do not refurbish wheels, but we know who does locally and will point you at them. Once they are back we coat them so brake dust stops sticking.

Do you work on classics?

Often. Older single-stage paint needs a lighter hand and sometimes no machine at all. We will tell you which after we have measured it.

Knaresborough and the towns around it

We collect and return across all of these from the Kestrel Court unit.
